Is Halotherapy, Exactly?

Halotherapy (from the Greek halos, meaning "salt") is the practice of breathing air infused with fine, dry salt particles. Most modern salt rooms use a halogenerator, a device that grinds pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride into a dry micro-powder — particles typically between 1 and 5 microns across, small enough to travel deep into the airways when inhaled — and disperses it into the room's air.

It's worth knowing the difference between a few related terms, since they get used loosely:

Why Salt Air Feels Like the Sea

The resemblance between a salt room and a beach day isn't just marketing — there's real physiology behind it.

Fine salt particles reach where regular air doesn't. Because the particles produced by a halogenerator are ground so small, they don't just settle in the nose and throat — they travel down into the bronchi and smaller airways, the same way sea spray and the coastal breeze do when you're standing at the shoreline.

Salt draws moisture — a principle used in medicine. Sodium chloride is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture toward itself. A Short History of Salt Therapy

The idea that salty, underground air might be good for the lungs isn't a modern wellness trend — it has a documented history stretching back nearly two centuries, built on direct observation long before anyone could explain the mechanism.

The salt mines of Poland. The Wieliczka Salt Mine near Kraków has been worked continuously since the 13th century. In 1839, physician Feliks Boczkowski opened the first health resort built around the mine, offering brine baths to visitors. In his writings, he noted something striking: the miners who spent their days breathing the salt-laden underground air seemed to suffer far fewer respiratory problems than the general population above ground.

A wartime discovery. The next major leap came, unexpectedly, from World War II. German physician Dr. K.H. Spannahel observed that people sheltering from bombing raids in salt mines and caves — sometimes for extended periods — showed noticeable respiratory benefits. Working with Hungarian geologist Dr. H. Kessler, he helped lay the groundwork for speleotherapy, the formal medical use of underground salt environments, in the years that followed.

From observation to treatment center. In 1958, Professor Mieczysław Skulimowski became the physician of the Wieliczka mine and began systematically treating patients underground, developing what became known as the Skulimowski method. By 1964, the world's first purpose-built facility of its kind — the underground "Kinga" health resort — was operating inside the mine, treating patients with asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. The approach spread to other salt mines across Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union; the first dedicated speleo-hospital outside Poland opened in a Ukrainian salt mine in 1968.

Above ground, and around the world. In the decades since, the core idea — controlled exposure to fine, dry salt air — was adapted so it no longer required an actual mine. Modern halogenerators let practitioners recreate that same microclimate in a spa, wellness center, or storefront, which is how salt therapy made its way from underground health resorts in Central and Eastern Europe into salt caves and salt rooms found across North America and the rest of the world today.

That's the throughline worth sharing with a first-time guest: this isn't a new invention chasing a trend. It's an old, patiently observed practice — noticed by working miners, studied by physicians, refined over generations — that modern technology has simply made easier to access.


What Modern Research Says (So Far)

Because this is a knowledge piece as well as a welcome mat, it's worth being precise here rather than overselling.

A number of smaller studies over the past two decades have looked at halotherapy's effects on people with chronic respiratory conditions — asthma, chronic bronchitis, and COPD in particular — and found encouraging signals: improved airway clearance, reductions in certain inflammatory markers, and better scores on quality-of-life questionnaires among regular participants. Some research has also pointed to halotherapy triggering anti-inflammatory processes in the body more broadly.

At the same time, the honest picture is that the research base is still young. A widely cited 2014 review of over 150 studies on halotherapy and COPD found the evidence inconclusive, largely because most of the available studies were small or methodologically limited. Reviews published as recently as 2021 and 2022 echoed the same conclusion: real, if modest, positive signals — paired with a clear call from researchers for larger, more rigorous clinical trials before firm medical claims can be made. Halotherapy has not been evaluated by the FDA as a medical treatment, and no major medical body currently recommends it as a replacement for prescribed respiratory care.

The most accurate — and most sustainable — way to talk about halotherapy is as a complementary wellness practice: something with a long history of traditional use, a plausible and partly-understood physiological mechanism, and a growing (though still early) body of supportive research. Guests with asthma, COPD, or other diagnosed respiratory conditions should be encouraged to keep working with their physician and continue any prescribed treatment — and to think of salt therapy as something they do alongside that care, not instead of it.
