# Why sandstone and basalt?

## Answer

Partway up the walls, this cave uses sandstone and basalt. They are not interchangeable décor.

Sandstone is porous. It can take up moisture from humid air and give it back when the air is drier — a quiet humidity buffer. Basalt is dense rock that holds heat and lets it go slowly, which helps a small room stay even. The homepage also says the rock lining helps regulate the microclimate while paying homage to the geology of the Columbia River Gorge. A 7-foot cherub wing sits above basalt in the Tour photos.

This is why the cave can be a cool 68–73°F rest rather than a pink-lit salt closet that swings with the weather. Materials doing jobs, not a theme-park Gorge mural.

It is not “ionized rock therapy.” If you want to see the band of stone, the free tour is the honest invitation.
