# What is halotherapy?

## Answer

Halotherapy (from halo, salt) is the practice of breathing air infused with fine, dry salt particles, with some of that same air on the skin. It is an above-ground way of echoing the microclimate people have long sought in European salt mines and on salt-spray coasts.

A modern cave like this one is man-made. What makes it an active salt room rather than a pretty salt closet is the halogenerator: it grinds pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride into a 1–5 micron dry aerosol and puts it in the air. Hood River’s generator runs before you rest, then goes quiet; the particles stay visible in a flashlight beam.

This is related to things most guests already know — saline spray, a salt gargle, an Epsom bath, a day at the beach — not identical to any of them. It is not speleotherapy inside a real mine, and it is not a neti pot.
